Refresh for a Charlotte Kitchen Lauren Nicole Designs brings a 1996 kitchen into today—with with the staying power of a fresh traditional look

This Charlotte family wasn’t living in the past—but their kitchen sure was, stuck endlessly in 1996.

It was time for a refresh—a veritable new kitchen, without the hassle of moving or gutting their home to the studs. To acheive this feat, they reached out to Lauren Clement, principal of Lauren Nicole Designs

“They wanted something light, bright, and fresh with an updated traditional feel, but nothing trendy,” she says. “They wanted something that would last.”

Clement’s first step was to get rid of the wallpaper that wrapped the room. In its place came a combination of two custom colors designed by Clement through Benjamin Moore.

Cabinets and trim wear “Sugar Cube,” a fresh, versatile white, while walls and ceilings are coated in “Makloud,” a white with gray-blue undertones. “The undertones bring life to a white kitchen,” Clement says.

She built further interest into the scheme with the wood tones and blue-gray upholstery of new barstools that exude the character and patina of classic Louis XVI pieces. Sunbrella fabric handles life in a home with a college student and his friends—and a couple of golden retreivers.

Dated countertops gave way to light, shimmering—and durable—quartz. A passé backsplash was out, replaced with modern-size white ceramic field tile paired with marble mosaic tile that adds visual impact above the cooktop.

Polished-nickel finishes on new faucets and hardware add to the lovely shimmer, as do a quartet of bubble-glass pendants. “The island is so big, we needed something with visual weight to balance it,” Clement says. “These light fixtures do that beautifully.”

To accentuate the overall light attitude, Clement installed glass-front doors on some of the upper cabinets. Mullions echo the gentle curve of the island.

The same glass-front cabinets bring a gracious air to the butler’s pantry, a much-used pass-through space that links the kitchen to the home’s back entrance and the dining room, which, in turn, opens to a family gathering area that also was in need of a refresh.

Clement came to the rescue with a coat of paint and new furnishings.

Updated window treatments pop in a touch of warm blue-gray but don’t distract from serene outdoor views. A round dining table is teamed with comfortable high-back chairs. “They wrap around you and feel so comfortable,” Clement says. “They encourage nice, long conversations and lingering after dinner is done.”

In the adjoining gathering space, Clement brought in a tailored sectional, new armchair and ottoman, and a new fireplace insert and surround that elevate the room’s sophistication while making it even more inviting for family, friends—and Duke.

“So many homes are in this tired 1990s timeframe now,” Clement says. “This project shows what a change, what impact you can achieve without changing a home structurally. This is such a big transformation—it’s like a completely different house.”

Making An Impact With Your Powder Room

Powder rooms are often underestimated in design. With minimal square footage, you’ll want to be strategic in creating a high-impact design that makes the room look and feel bigger than it actually is!

Pattern Play – A powder room is the perfect place to experiment with bold patterns, colors and textures that might be considered too overwhelming for a master bathroom.

Tile Your Wall – Tile is a great way to create a “wow factor”. Go with the unexpected and play with different colors and patterns throughout, or consider making a statement by installing tile on just one wall.

Bold Contrast – Mix unexpected elements to make a bold statement. This is also a great place to tie in your personality and hobbies (even his!).

Increase Functionality – When working with an already small space, you’ll want to think about making the most of every inch of space. Here, we were able to install a separate work sink for preparing floral arrangements, washing laundry and everything in between.

Before and After

Successful Home Renovations

When I am presented with a new renovation project (whether it is a full home or just one space) I like to first take a step back and think through several key steps in the planning / design process. Each and every client has different priorities and end goals, so the most important part of this process is taking the time to go through each space and determine a few key factors: what needs to be done, budget, desired end goal for the space – functionality versus design.

Prep Work – Create your desired wish list, then make your budget – what are your “must haves” versus your “dreams”? When making this list, consider what will make the most impact and increase functionality of the overall project. Working alongside a designer/contractor will streamline the process and help you avoid pitfalls along the way.

Style and Color Palette – After you’ve created your renovation “to do” list, the next part is design planning. What key colors and patterns do you want to implement throughout? Think about colors/patterns that you’ll be happy with for years to come.

Realistic Timeframe / Expectations – Always expect the project to take longer than it should. With potential backorders or mistakes along the way, you never know what to expect. It’s always important to expect the worse – at times your home will be in a complete state of chaos – but the end result is worth it!

Don’t forget to check in along the way to make sure all the details are being met throughout the process because sometimes changes occur for the better along the way!

It’s all in the details! This is not a place to skimp – it’s the small details that bring in added character and excitement daily.

Take before, during and after pics. I know this can be “easier said than done”, but I can’t tell you how many times this is overlooked. It’s remarkable to go back and look at the before shot to see how far the process has come along!

Bring Your Outdoor Space To Life

As the days begin to grow longer and warmer, there is no place I would rather spend my time than outdoors. From horseback riding to finishing work at night on the patio, there is just something about taking full advantage of warmer weather.

I’m mixing things up this summer and instead of talking about “bringing the outside in,” I’ll be sharing tips on “bringing the inside out” to help maximize your outdoor space and increase its functionality.

Outdoor Pillows – Punch up your outdoor color palette from season-to-season by swapping out pillows (and even cushions) to create a new and refreshing look.

Accessorize – When it comes to the small details in an outdoor space, think like you would for an interior – textiles with performance fabrics to withstand the elements, artwork, candles, vases. For accent furniture, think garden stools as poufs as accent furniture (that will also double as extra seating).

Fire Pit – As summer nights tend to bring a slight chill, a fire pit is the perfect solution to provide warmth and help extend your time spent outdoors.

Kids Zone – If you are designing with children in mind, consider creating a fun zone for activities to keep your kids active all summer long that also encourage exploring, building, creating and learning (chalk, bubbles, sporting goods, pool toys).

Fabulously Functional Work Spaces

We spend so much time in our home offices, laundry rooms and kids workspaces that why not make them beautiful spaces that we love to work in. When it comes to home renovations, one of the first questions I ask my client is — what is the primary function of this space? How much time do you spend here and how do you want it to feel and work when we are done? I want to make sure that this is a space that my client loves to come to and will add lasting value to the home for years to come.

Time for a Refresh – My client spends a lot of time in this space since it’s her workspace, the laundry room and command center for the family. It was time for a refresh to lighten and brighten the room so it’s a happy place for the client to be everyday.

Mudroom Turned Extra Closet Space – This simple solution offers a space to store everything from kids’ book bags to purses and extra dog leashes with built-in custom cabinetry for each family member. Bonus: storage bins with ventilation for shoes!

Who said chores had to be boring? This laundry space has so much function in it – it’s crazy – a sink, pull out hanging for clothes, space for folding and even a crafting space.

Don’t forget the kiddos! If you are designing with children in mind, functionality is one of the most important factors and this back area of a client’s home is no exception! The kids’ homework space has a large work table and custom built-in cabinets to keep the mess under control. Light and bright with a large window, your kids won’t mind working here and their creativity is sure to thrive. Right off this space, there is a laundry room where mom can catch up on laundry while keeping track of the kids!

Light it Up – How To: Make an Impact Against Low Ceilings With Lighting

While so many of us have high ceilings in new construction homes, Charlotte has so many beautiful, older homes that have lower ceilings and that can be a challenge to make rooms feel light, bright and expansive.

Lighting is often one of the most overlooked concepts in any space, although it has the power to make a great impact. Today I am excited to share tips on combatting low ceilings with proper lighting solutions.

Overhead Lighting- For a center fixture, the general role of thumb is that it should be wider than it is taller. This will help better disperse light throughout the space and fit in the room nicely without feeling like an imposition in the space. Additionally, recessed lights are also a great idea to help keep a space bright and evenly lit.

Task and Ambient Lighting – A variation in heights is nice to help achieve both task and ambient lighting – a combination of floor lamps, accent lamps on a sofa/console table and table lamps. Make sure the shades are white or light in color to keep the space bright.

Dimmers – All recessed lights and fixtures should be on a dimmer to maximize light on gloomy days, or at night time, so they can be adjusted to softer lighting as needed. With lower ceilings light can feel more harsh, yet it can also be more functional so a dimmer is a lifesaver.

Spring 2019 High Point Market

I am so fortunate to have spent the last week at High Point Furniture Market, where twice a year (every October and April), all of the design community – vendors and manufactures – get together to showcase the upcoming trends. As a designer, market is the perfect time for me to look, feel, test, discover and learn the newest product trends. I am excited to share my favorite finds with you and share insight on how I’ll be incorporating these trends into upcoming projects over the next year.

Gold Is Back – while this is something we have seen before, I am intrigued by the new ways manufacturers are bringing brushed gold accents into pieces. Gold really has the power to make an impact in a room with minimal effort. Touches of gold here and there will dress up your space and create a “wow” factor.

Warm Wood Tone Furniture – I do love a lacquered or painted piece of furniture, but there is something classic and timeless about a natural wood finish. Through incorporating wood toned furniture, you are able to crate warmth and texture in the space as well as a natural element.

Florals – for the past several years neutral fabrics have taken a forefront in design and I am glad to see florals making a comeback. If you are hesitant to incorporate florals into your home, you can do so in small touches such as drapery fabric, bedding, or even wall art to offset and create a contrast against neutrals.

Green – this is one of the hottest colors trends that is still going strong. I saw this introduced back in the fall and the idea of bringing the outside in is still just as prevalent. From green textiles and furniture to live greenery, I am a firm believer that every space needs just a touch of greenery.

Introducing Color to Your Cabinetry

Spring is officially here and I have been thinking about new and unexpected ways to bring color back into the home. For the past couple of years neutral hues have taken a forefront in interior design, and I am excited to see a color change starting with cabinetry.

Introducing Color to Your Cabinetry – Traditionally we have seen white cabinetry used throughout kitchens, bathrooms and laundry room. I enjoy experimenting with new paint colors and seeing the magic of how a coat of paint has the power to completely transform a space.

#1 Mix It Up In The Kitchen – Use a bright pop of color on a center island to create a contrast again white cabinetry in the kitchen.

#2 Create a Calm and Serene Bathroom – When it came to this neutral and luxury bathroom, I decided to incorporate color in the cabinetry instead of the tile or accessories.

If you do not want to stray too far from a neutral paint color, choose cabinetry paint similar to this. While this color can still be considered a neutral, the hue creates more interest in a bathroom than a traditional white.

#3 – Stylish Storage in The Laundry Room – While laundry room cabinets are often considered for their practicality, painting the cabinets will turn this functional space into a beautiful room. This is a simple way to add style to any otherwise simplistic space.

Design Tips

Wows that Wow

I often find that Spring is the perfect time to reorganize and redecorate your home. This morning I shared tips on WCNC Charlotte Today about creating “Walls that Wow” to give your home a fresh look this season!

#1 Wall Decor – Art is often a great way to add personality to your home. I want to share a few tips and tricks for best displaying your collected pieces. Start small – too much hanging on a wall can create unwanted contrast and distract the eye as it bounces around the room. Lighten up a dark space and create the illusion of a larger room by hanging a mirror in an entryway, above a mantel, or in an unexpected space! Place together both mirrors and wall art to create added interest.

#2 Wallpaper – Wallpaper is back and simpler to change than ever! With advanced technology, wallpaper is easier to put up, tear down, and replace. New prints and textures with a modern flair are available, providing a quick change and impact into your space. When it comes to wallpaper placement, I tend to use it as a statement in a small room or to add drama on an accent wall.

#3 Trim – It’s always the little things in a room that make a big impact. While trim has a practical use to hide imperfections, it is most often include in design to create a statement. Here you can see where I had a custom geometric pattern incorporated into this remodel. While the walls are a soft neutral, the pattern creates depth and interest on the wall.

Decorating with Plants

With Spring quickly approaching and warmer temperatures on the horizon, I can’t help but have fresh blooms and greenery on my mind! Whether you are able to go to the market and pick up fresh florals each week, or you use faux greenery and florals here and there as fill ins I can’t help but argue that every space needs an element of nature! Do you use fresh, faux, or a mix of both?

#1 Bring The Outside In – Looking toward the outside world can often inspire some of the best elements of design. Implementing natural materials and textiles in the home can help create a stronger sense of relaxation and connection towards our favorite place. If your ideal weekend escape includes a trip to the mountains, take from this experience and incorporate rich earthy tones in your home along with wood accents and rustic greenery!

#2 Fresh Florals – Fresh florals and greenery will brighten up a corner, bringing in texture, color, and depth to your space year long. Take weekly trips to the farmers market to pick up fresh blooms, or experiment with bringing in fresh blooms and branches from your yard as the weather warms up.

#3 Faux Greenery – Boxwoods are my go-to when it comes to faux greenery. A budget for fresh flowers every week can quickly add up, so boxwoods are the perfect compromise as they provide a true natural look and feel that is guaranteed to last for years with no maintenance and upkeep.

Design Tips

Designing With Dogs

My adorable pup, Lucy, joined me on WBTV Morning Break to talk about decorating with dogs and protecting your pretty furnishings from your furry friends!

#1. Using Performance Fabrics – While there is something idyllic about cozying up on a plush velvet sofa, it is often not practical in our everyday lives! With kids, pets, and everyday messes, a performance fabric holds high value. Wipe off a stain with ease and your furniture is as good as new! The beauty of performance fabrics is that you never have to choose beauty over function, with endless colors and fabrics your options are limitless.

#2. Dog-Friendly Bedding Fabrics – For those of us who love to cuddle up with our adorable pooches each night, dog-friendly bedding is a must and some studies even suggest that humans get a better night’s sleep while snuggling a dog! Place a pet-friendly bed scarf on top of your comfortable to serve as an extra layer of protection from dog hairs, scratches, and dirt. Washable throws are perfect for pups that like to burrow under them. Don’t forget the floor! Place a flat weave rug of man-made fibers by bedroom entryway doors to catch dirt from your pet’s paws before they climb in bed.

#3 Dog-Friendly Accessories – When it comes to your furry friends, you should not let their personal needs compromise your home design. I suggest taking note of your personal design aesthetic and incorporating this into your pet’s accessories. Think clear jars filled with treats and baskets that match your overall color scheme to place dog toys, leashes, etc. so that everything has a place.

New Year, New Decor: 3 Top Tips For a Major Update

The lights and decorations are gone and it’s the perfect time to reassess your decor. This is always the time of year that we tend to look at our lives and goals for the new year and it’s no different for your decor. Before you put all of your “every day” decor back take a minute to think about what you liked and didn’t like and how you can improve it.

1. Update Your Lighting – The proper lighting in any room will have a dramatic change since most homes are largely underlit. Assess your lamps and your chandelier and even replacing those ceiling fans with a beautiful light fixture. Remember in lighting “bigger is better!”

2. Add Window Treatments – Custom Window Treatments add the finishing touch to every room. You might think – why go to the expense – but once you have them you will understand how they add color and pattern to your room. Make sure you select the right window treatment for the space and the window and again don’s skimp here — fullness and the right height make all of the difference.

3. Paint Updating your paint is an instant update for any room. Try to stay neutral in your larger, main spaces but don’t be afraid to add that dramatic pop of color in a dining room, powder room or master bedroom.
